What are you painting to currently?

Postby Charlie St Clair » Fri Feb 05, 2010 10:53 am

A bit curious... what's everyone painting to?

Myself, I have slowly become more and more unable to watch media whilst painting. The job comes out sloppy, and production is at a woefully slow rate.

So that leaves me turning to podcasts and music.

Podcasts I'm juggling at the moment:
Heelanhammer - a great fantasy podcast
Bad Dice - another fantasy podcast
Worlds End Radio - a 40k, fantasy and bloodbowl podcast
Ricky Jervais podcasts - there's oodles of them, and they're all extremely awesome

I also like to throw on a few of the different BBC football podcasts, as its a great way to keep up with all the happenings outside of the premier league games themselves (which I put the paintbrushes down to watch :P!).

I've kinda turned away from a lot of the other podcasts, especially 40k radio, which these days just leaves me with a desire to carpetbomb the northern states.

I find podcasts work great for keeping me motivated about the hobby, and losing track of time. If you don't want to feel like you've spent all day painting, throw a few of these on. You'll get a decent amount done, without burning out too soon.

Music:
I kinda have 2 different modes for painting, I either need to get a lot done quickly, or I'm painting a single mini here or there, and would enjoy taking my time.

If I'm in speed mode, for now - I listen to music that I don't actually necessarily like all that much. Instead I pick songs with a reasonably high tempo, that can't help but suck you in and get you moving/thinking at that tempo.
This for me includes, but is not limited to the following:
Certain Metallica albums (of which my wife owns them all), various initial D soundtracks, various psychedelic trance (e.g. infected mushroom), Deathklok (a comedy speed metal album by a fictitious band on an adult swim cartoon) and pretty much the soundtrack to any World of Warcraft PVP movie users have made from a couple of years back ;)

Otherwise, if I'm just painting a single figure or want to potter about taking my time at a relaxed pace, right now I'm juggling between the following:
The last 3 Muse albums (Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations, The Resistance)
Flyleaf (Momento Mori)
Garbage (all albums)
Flight of the Conchords (both albums)
Rise Against (a motley crew of tracks from all of their albums)

So what are you guys listening to, so I can go check it out a bit, and vice versa :D!

P.S. To save Jason the trouble of replying, his only response will be "The sound of Charlies voice" as the only time he bloody paints is when I nag him and walk him through it >.<

I usually paint while watching one of the series I have on DVD lately. That way if anything good happens while I'm looking away I just rewind. I've just finished watching the first 6 seasons of Married with Children. Not sure what I will move onto next.

Wow....I don't recognise any of the bands Charlie mentioned. That makes me uber-happy.

I listen to podcasts - Heelanhammer is best - or watch the History Channel (I remember when it was News)

metal bands have different names? Wow you learn something everyday. I thought they were all called deathmetalhammerfistslayerwarrior. Next you will be trying to tell me that orks care about fashion. you might as well listen to recordings of an artillery barrage.

I've still got several seasons of myth busters to get through and they make reasonable listening as background.

Bad news for you Pete, I have The Specials, Sex Pistols, Clash and Oasis all in my play list.

I used to date a girl who would occasionally cut herself to the cure Pete. Do you cut yourself and date teenage boys?!

Well this has got to be a first. Moderators derailing the topic from a forum thread.

A first for this forum maybe, but I've seen it happen plenty of times elsewhere.
