Battle of the Motorways

By Mark “Monty” Skilton

Laying down the challenge!

The Battle of the Motorways is a inter club challenge trophy between The Warlords and the Regiment.

It takes the form of an organised club raid run twice per year, as close as possible to the month leading up to Call to Arms and the month leading up to Valley Con.

The purpose is to provide a venue people to test their armies prior to these conventions against non-Warlords members.

The Rules

The competition must include at least 3 games in at least 3 periods (e.g. could be DBM15, DBM 25 and 40K, or FoW, WHFB and 40K) scheduled to be run at the next Call to Arms or Valley Con.

All games are Warlord against Regiment player. At the players discretion more than one game can be played during the day.

There must be at least 1 game involving a junior member of Warlords.

Only an odd number of games will count towards the trophy, so if there ends up being an even number of games played, the one that is discarded will be the game that finishes last, as long as at least 3 game sin 3 periods have been played.

The game rules will follow the rules for the various competitions as per the following Call to Arms or Valley Con.

The winning club will receive the Battle of the Motorways Trophy (a 76mm shell casing) which can be displayed at the following Call to Arms or Valley Con convention and kept by the winning club until the next iteration of the event.

Interested?

The first round is likely to be on 7 August 2004.

Those at Warlords who wish to partake should register their interest in the Battle of the Motorways by emailing Mark “Monty” Skilton.

Return of the Emperor’s Crumpet Boy

By John Tailby

I thought it would be a good idea to resurrect the Emperor’s Crumpet Boy who has been languishing in my dungeon for far too long.

A while ago we ran a ladder challenge system but it fell into disuse. I thought this might be a good way to inspire people to get some more games in.

The Rules

The rules for this challenge trophy are similar to a sports ladder where you go up by defeating those above you and nicking their spot on the ladder. You also have to be mindful of those below you who are also looking to do the same thing. Just like corporate life really. The rules are simple!

Games

  • 1,500 points or other mutually agreed points value.

  • Use army strategy ratings to determine which scenario is used or any other mutually agreed scenario.

  • Attacker and Defender resolved as written in the rules.

Trophy

  • John Tailby has the trophy so he will start as holder.

  • The holder retains the Trophy until defeated.

  • Victory is determined as set out in the rules.

  • The Trophy must be displayed on the table during the game

Challenges

  • The holder must defend the Trophy once per month. The holder must use the armyrace they won the trophy with for all defences. If the holder comes into possession of the trophy without winning a challenge they holder must use the same army race in all defences.

  • Challenges must be played at the Wellington Warlords.

  • Games should start before 12.00pm to ensure plenty of time to reach a conclusion.

  • Participants are free to use any army they wish and the players may change armies between challenges.

  • Each month players may challenge a person up to 3 places above them on the ladder. If they win they take the place of the person they challenged and the defeated party and every one below them moves down one spot. Challenges will be on a first come first serve basis. Once a person has made or been challenged they cannot make or be challenged further, they are locked in combat until the challenge is resolved. After a challenge players should notify John Tailby of the result.

  • Players that enter the competition after the first month start at the bottom of the ladder.

Getting Started

  1. People interested in participating in the competition should let John Tailby know by Saturday 17th July 2004.

  2.  All names will be put into a hat and drawn out to determine the order of challengers.

  3. Challengers will be in the order they are drawn from the hat with the first challenge should be played before the end of July.

  4. Order of the ladder will be displayed at the club.

  5. Please ensure you put 40k ladder in the subject line so you go into the correct mailbox.

  6. Thanks to Russell Briant whose document I have shamelessly plagiarised.

The Golden Tigger

By Russell Briant

The Warlords has introduced a new challenge trophy competition for the World War II period gamers - The Golden Tigger! The rules are based on the successful format drawn up by Vince Cholewa for the Vitalstatistics Shield ancients challenge.

The rules for this challenge trophy are similar to rugby's Ranfurly Shield, whereby the holder was challenged for the trophy by a pretender.

First Holder of the Golden Tigger
       Michail Woolf

The Rules

The rules are simple!

Battles

  • 1,500 point 15mm Flames of War game.

  • Scenario is chosen by the holder (home ground advantage) from any of the published scenarios and advised to the Challenger in advance of the game – the rules for swapping scenarios in a tournament do not apply (e.g. no option to change Hold the Line to Big Push).

  • Attacker and Defender resolved as written in the rules.

Trophy

  • The holder retains the Trophy until defeated.

  • Victory is determined as set out in the rules.

  • The Trophy must be displayed on the table during the game.

Challenges

  • The holder must defend the Trophy once per month.

  • Challenges must be played at the Wellington Warlords.

  • Games should start before 12.00pm to ensure plenty of time to reach a conclusion.

  • Participants are free to use any army they wish (though the figures used must be both painted and historically accurate) and the holder may change armies between challenges.

  • The loser falls to the bottom of the ladder (how the mighty have fallen).

Ladder Climbing (to keep it Interesting)

  • Each month players may challenge a person up to 3 places above them on the ladder.

  • The next challenger (number 2 on the list) can’t be challenged from below (if you’ve got to the top you should get your crack)

  • If they win they take the place of the person they challenged and the defeated party and every one below them moves down one spot.

  • Challenges will be on a first come first serve basis.

  • Once a person has made or been challenged they cannot make or be challenged further, they are locked in combat until the challenge is resolved.

  • After a challenge players should notify Russell Briant of the result.

Getting Started

  1. The first draw was made on Saturday 19th June 2004.

  2. The list of challengers and their month of challenge is published on the club web site.

  3.  New participants contact Russell Briant and start at the bottom of the ladder

Vitalstatistix Shield

                         History

A number of years ago, a trophy was donated to Warlords by Club member, Vince Cholewa. This trophy was the Vitalstatistix Shield. It featured the Gaulish general, Vitalstatistix (of Asterix fame) being carried on his battle shield by two attendants.

When he donated the trophy, Vince drew up a set of rules making this a challenge trophy for Ancient wargaming at the Club.

The rules are simple!

Rules

Rules were laid down making this a challenge trophy similar to rugby's Ranfurly Shield, whereby the holder was challenged for the Shield by a pretender. Originally, there was to be a discrete challenge 'season' but in resurrecting the trophy this has been dispensed with (tilt of the hat to the new professional era in which we find ourselves).

                        Games

400AP 15mm DBM (though 25mm by mutual agreement)

                               Shield

The Shield Bearer holds the Shield until defeated. There is no time limit on games so the only draw possible is by mutual demoralisation.

The Shield must be displayed on the table during the game.

                       Challenges

The Shield Bearer must defend the Shield once per month. Challenges must be played at the Wellington Warlords. Games should start before 12.00pm to ensure plenty of time to reach a conclusion.

Participants are free to use any army they wish (though the figures used must be both painted and historically accurate) and the Shield Bearer may change armies between challenges.

R
ecord of Challenge

On April 21 Keith Marshall's name was drawn from a hat containing all aspirants and he became the Shield Bearer of the Vitalstatistix Shield. At the same time a draw was made for the monthly challenges and this is laid out below. Any member of Warlords interested in joining the list of challenges should contact Peter Dunn.

Who can Bring Order to Chaos?

A 15mm DBM Doubles Campaign

Historical Background

The Western Wellingtonian Empire collapsed in the face of a massive horde of barbarians. The Eastern Empire has turned inward face of the barbarian threat in the East and is focusing on defending its own borders. Having defeated the Western Wellingtonian Empire the barbarian horde in the West splintered into fractions that attacked and destroyed one another. To make a chaotic situation even worse, military adventurers from other empires have taken advantage of the situation to conquer some cities. Now all that remains are city states surrounded by a sea of chaos, with mercenaries and brigands roaming the vast spaces between them. From ashes will arise a phoenix it is said. Who will bring order to chaos?

Many of the leaders of the city states or mercenary bands that roam between them believe that they are the one! The blood of the old Western Emperors flows in the veins of some. It is their duty and destiny to restore the greatness that was the Western Wellingtonian Empire! Others are the sons of the great barbarian chieftains that brought about the downfall of the Empire. Since they suckled on their mothers breast they have been raised been to believe that it is their duty to finish the glorious task that their fathers started. For the military adventurers from other empires this is their opportunity to establish a dynasty of their own. What is your destiny? Have you got the balls to make it to come true?
