Welcome to the Wellington Warlords, Wargaming in the Capital since 1972

A Bit about Terrain

Introduction

Attractive terrain makes a game look great on the table. It is well worth taking a little time to build or collect some nice terrain. The first step is really simple. A green or light brown sheet for a base cloth. You can buy them at places like the Warehouse or Spotlight for $10-$20, and it looks so much better than playing on an uncovered table.

Club terrain

The Warlords has some terrain-hills, buildings, woods, base cloths etc-which members are welcome to use at meetings. It does suffer wear and tear, but please be gentle with it and put it back in one of the cupboards after using it. If any of it is damaged, please tell a committee member so that we can fix it. No one will be upset about it being damaged, it happens through use, but we do need to know if repairs are necessary.

Building your own terrain

SteinlagerThis is lots of fun and involves using stuff from around the house, work or school like thick cardboard, expanded polystyrene, string, wood, sand, pebbles, bits of fabric etc. PVA glue is highly recommended, and costs a lot less to buy by the litre from the supermarket or a hardware store than at model shops. Little jars of model paints or tubes of artists paint don't go far on terrain. Visit paint shops for their smaller cans of house paint or even test pots for painting terrain.

Have a look around the club and talk to people about what they have built and how.

The best book describing model making techniques and including many excellent examples that would suit all periods is Games Workshop's, Building Wargaming Terrain. On a dollars per page basis, this isn't the cheapest book you would ever buy. On a lots of information that I can use basis it is superb.
